A person who contaminated sweets with tranquilliser and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two children who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight children and one adult became sick at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the courthouse on Friday.

However, he denied one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on late November.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She said his victims were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he operated.

The man played a "treat game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She stated the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had concerns in recently.

The prosecutor continued: "In the summer" his stepson had worries about the activities, for good reason.

"They resolved" to examine in the individual's items."

The legal counsel said objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his family member notified the police about his suspicions.

She said the man went on to play the "sweet game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the incident.

Mrs Prior explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.

She stated the defendant then engaged in the "treat game" in a room of five youngsters.
