The UK and US have hammered out a key trade agreement that will preserve no import taxes on UK medicine exports being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This move guarantees that duties on these vital products will stay at nothing for a duration of three years.

This agreement follows previous warnings to dramatically increase import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases floated reaching double the cost.

"This deal between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for new treatments and brings long-overdue fairness to American-British medicine commerce," a release noted.

Economic Impact

Drugs represent one of the UK's largest exports to the United States, which is easily the largest buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics show that in the year to the end of September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This figure accounted for a significant portion of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This deal secures jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a international leader for biotech and pharma," a minister remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The pact involves several specific commitments from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to double total health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded 20%.

Industry Background

The deal follows a ongoing dispute between the drug companies and the ministers over drug pricing and regulatory access.

The disagreement were heightened by claims that US patients were paying significantly more for the identical medicines than people in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

One official stated that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had declined as a proportion of its total funding over the past decade.
